Mercyful Fate announced new dates for their 2022 US tour dates. On this tour, some of the metal bands also will join them. Mercyful Fate is a Danish heavy and black metal band hailing from Copenhagen and formed in 1981 by singer King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann. They were influenced by progressive rock as well as hard rock, with lyrics about Satan and the supernatural.
Mercyful Fate were part of the initial generation of black metal that took place in the mid-to-late 1980s, alongside Venom and Bathory.
Why did Mercyful Fate break up in 1985?
Although they gained cult fan popularity around the globe, Mercyful Fate broke up in April 1985 because of differences in the music. The guitarist Hank Shermann wanted the band to shift to a more commercial style; King Diamond refused and announced his resignation in Mercyful Fate, which led to the band’s dissolution.
Now, they are going on another tour in the US 20 years later. The band also shared a statement about it:

Mercyful Fate’s frontman King Diamond also talked about what’s going on in the band:
“This is not a reunion. We are just picking it up again because the stars are aligned correctly now. And that’s been the thing all the time. Before when people asked, ‘Do you think you’re going to play with Mercy again?’ I would never say never. But it’s got to be completely right.
I don’t want to go out there and try to milk a cow and do a show with the backdrop and then collect and say, ‘That was that.’ That’s not right. And Hank has the same philosophy. Either we do it 200%, or we don’t do it.”
King Diamond also mentioned their new album:
“We are working on it. Brian Slagel at Metal Blade said he wants the King Diamond album to be released first. We’re not going to change things just because everything has been postponed, and now it’s Mercy playing live. Andy sent me eight songs of his for the King Diamond album, but that’s maybe enough for his share for two albums. The story will be over two albums.”
