Metal Bands Inspired By Lord of The Rings and Tolkien
It’s not very rare to see the music getting inspiration from literature. It was always like that throughout the entire history. But while time changing, the inspiration sources also change. In our current day of age, we see a lot of fictional universes. And they are of course inspired by each other. But that inspiration chain goes back to a certain name. And that name is no one else but John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (or J.R.R. Tolkien) is the creator of Lord Of The Rings and the Middle Earth universe. After Tolkien’s creation of Middle Earth, a lot of writers, directors, creator shaped their own imaginary worlds based on Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
J.R.R. Tolkien didn’t only inspire other fictional universes, he also inspired music bands. And now, we’re going to talk about some metal bands, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien. Here are some of them:
Balrog
Lord of the Rings fans is familiar with that name. But for those who are not familiar with it, Balrog is a huge, demonic character from the Lord Of The Rings universe. If we look at the Balrog photos, he is easily one of the most “heavy metal” characters from LOTR. So someone just picked that name for their black metal project. And that someone is french musician Sébastien Tuvi. But their LOTR inspiration is mostly about just band name since their lyrics are not about the universe. But from time to time, we see Tuvi honor the LOTR series with songs like Nazgül Warlord.
Galadriel
And we have another name from the Lord of The Rings. But this time it is not a devil, flaming, heavy metal name. Because Galadriel is an elvish lady. She is the “Lady Of The Woods”. Actually, there isn’t just one band with the name Galadriel. There are at least 3 of them but we are going to talk about the Slovakian one. Even though they’ve changed their style throughout their career, they are mainly a folk black metal band. They’ve shared 9 albums since 1997 and used LOTR-related names for their songs.
Gimli, Son of Gloin
And another Lord Of The Rings character. Even if you are not a fan of the LOTR series, almost everyone must’ve heard the legendary dwarf, Gimli Son of Gloin. Two men from Southhampton UK decided to pay a tribute to that epic LOTR character and dedicated all their songs to Gimli. But there is something different about this band. Because they don’t have a vocalist. Or we can say, actual Gimli actor John Rhys-Davies is the vocal. It’s because they are using actual lines from the movie.
Gorgoroth
We have another black metal band inspired by LOTR. This time, they are from Norway. Actually, Norwegian bands, in general, have a huge thing for J. R. R. Tolkien and his works. And Gorgoroth is one of those bands named after LOTR. Their name came from the evil part of LOTR, Mordor.
