1. Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath is highly regarded as one of the precursors of heavy metal, perhaps the main one. The band was formed in 1968 when music had a different direction and, although rock already existed, it was far from what the Birmingham band contributed. That dark and lubricious sound with heavy riffs and that almost agonizing voice of Ozzy was something very different from what was heard at the time. Therefore, part of Black Sabbath‘s success came from the innovation they contributed by almost creating a new musical genre.

2. Judas Priest

Only a year after the appearance of Black Sabbath, Birmingham released another of those old metal bands that have been very important in the history of metal. Judas Priest was an important part of the new wave of British heavy metal, which helped them make a name for themselves in the industry.

Accept‘s direct and aggressive metal would not have them in the same place today that they did manage to achieve, especially in the 80s.

Udo‘s voice probably wouldn’t worked in the current market from a commercial perspective. On the other hand, the band’s raw, military look would have probably been very divisive. This is a band that stood out because of its attitude, although this is a different market.

4. Megadeth

In the case of Megadeth, the difficulty they could encounter in succeeding in these times is due to two aspects. The first, the instrumental complexity, especially in guitars. The second, Mustaine‘s vocals, which are clearly not the best despite being already part of the band’s sound. Megadeth emerged in the 80s, an ideal time for their style to be appreciated and become a reference.

Defining Tool as a subgenre is pretty tricky. In fact, defining Tool in general is too. The American band appeared on the scene in 1990 and while their beginnings were heavy metal oriented, they quickly began to evolve into something a bit more alternative or progressive. That evolution was what formed the huge fan base they have today.

However, the complexity of Tool‘s sound would not be easily assimilated today. In almost no way does Tool seem like they would be successful if they emerged today. From the band’s behavior off stage to the music itself, through to the stage performance and music videos, everything is a difficult sell these days.

7. Dream Theater

The case of Dream Theater is a bit like that of Tool, although in a much more musical sense. The band has always been characterized by its technical excellence on each instrument and its long and complex songs. And that is precisely one of the points that might not help them develop popularity today.

In fact, at the time it was also an obstacle. Such long songs are usually difficult to promote on radio or television or, nowadays, in social media. The complexity of the songs also turns out to be an obstacle for the current public to appreciate the band in its proper measure.

It is true that Dream Theater might not be a commercial juggernaut but it has had solid success. However, it is difficult to envision that degree of success if they had come out today. They probably would have been a very niche band in that regard.

8. Motley Crue

11. Mercyful Fate

Mercyful Fate was formed in early 1981 in Copenhagen, Denmark by vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann. Their dark imagery and pioneering first-wave black metal sound influenced subgenres such as thrash and death metal, but their raw, unpolished production would clash with today’s high-fidelity studio standards.

Many of their compositions stretched beyond eight minutes, “Satan’s Fall” alone runs for over eleven minutes, an epic length that contrasts sharply with modern streaming norms favoring concise, three-minute tracks

Despite their foundational role, Mercyful Fate’s occult and satanic lyrical themes courted controversy, “Into the Coven” was named among the PMRC’s Filthy Fifteen, and their distribution relied on underground channels rather than mainstream promotion.

As a result, the band never scored significant chart success, instead cultivating a devoted cult following that would likely remain niche in today’s algorithm-driven industry.

12. Bathory

Bathory was formed in Vällingby, Sweden in March 1983 by Tomas “Quorthon” Forsberg, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneering bands of black metal and Viking metal. Their early work was characterized by raw, lo-fi production and bleak atmospheres, defining the blueprint for Scandinavian black metal, yet such unpolished aesthetics would run counter to today’s audience demands for crystal-clear recordings.

The band’s epic tracks, such as the nearly eleven-minute title song “Blood Fire Death,” would face challenges in an era where streaming platforms reward shorter, hook-driven content with higher play counts.

Bathory stopped performing live early in their career and never toured, opting instead for a studio-focused approach and minimal promotion that cultivated underground mystique.
