Jacoby Shaddix (lead singer) began his drumming career but soon realized that Dave was much better than him. Shaddix also picked up the bass and was a part of the band. But his bass was stolen from his house. Then he resorted to singing. When he was 17, Jacoby Shaddix began working as a dishwasher to help finance his home with a friend. Then, he became the janitor of the hospital before deciding to concentrate entirely only on Papa Roach in 1999.
The band’s name, Papa Roach also inspired by Shaddix his step-grandfather, Howard William Roatch, who was known by the name of Papa Roach.

Early years of Papa Roach:
Papa Roach was born in January 1993 with the lead vocalist Jacoby Shaddix and drummer Dave Buckner who met on the Vacaville High School football field. The lead guitarist Jerry Horton later joined them from nearby Vanden High School, rhythm guitarist Anne Mikolajcik and trombonist Ben Luther, and bassist Will James. The band joined the high school’s talent competition, performing a rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s hit song “Fire”.The band ultimately lost the show. On March 23, 1993, Ben Luther left the group as did Anne Mikolajcik left as well. Papa Roach was practicing every day and playing any gig they could find. The first tour van they used was named Moby Dick, where Shaddix was in awe of the name of his debut stage show “Coby Dick”.The group picked to name their band Papa Roach from the nickname of Shaddix’s step-grandfather Howard William Roatch.
The year 1994 was the time that Papa Roach released their debut EP, entitled Potatoes in time for the Christmas season. Ryan Brown temporarily replaced their drummer Dave Buckner, as Buckner was living in Seattle to study art. In 1995 they released a song demonstration recorded at Sound Farm Studios titled Caca Bonita. Buckner also returned to the band, in 1996 swapped their original bassist Will James with longtime roadie Tobin Esperance, citing that James was a participant in a camp run by a local church that could limit the band’s summertime performing and touring.

I feel like this was my calling. I played clarinet all the way through grade school, so I had a real understanding of breath control, and I understood the value of rehearsal. Those elements got me prepared for being in a band more than anything.”
“Oh man, it’s been a minute. It’s probably been five or six years. There’s one song, Orange Drive Palms, that we talk about bringing the riff back and rewriting it into a new song because it’s such a dope riff.”
“With Papa Roach, I get to scratch all the itches I have creatively. I really do. If we want to write something that’s punk as fuck, we do it. If we want to write something that’s hip hop and pop, something that’s metal, fucking riffing, or straight-up rock, we’ll do it. And we’ve done that throughout our career. In the last six years, since Crooked Teeth, we’ve reinvented the band. It feels like we’re in our own lane again. I felt for a minute we were starting to turn into an average white guy rock band, and I don’t want to sound like that.”
