Bohemian Rhapsody was a huge success when it first came out. Saying that sentence can be applied to both movie and of course, the song. But today, we are going to talk about movie one. Starring Rami Malek, the 2018 movie of Bohemian Rhapsody was a huge hit. A lot of people were at the theaters and talking about the movie for a very long time after the movie came out. And they weren’t only Queen fans or rock fans. Bohemian Rhapsody movie managed to get almost everyone’s attention and that obviously helped with the numbers. And according to the latest news, this success is continuing, especially on the money-making side.
According to a recent report from Companies House, Bohemian Rhapsody is still helping Queen Productions to earn more than £100,000 (equal to $137,864) every day.
When the Bohemian Rhapsody Movie first came out, there were conversations about this movie making Queen members crazy rich. But there were also counterarguments to that sayings. One of those came from Brian May, the Queen guitarist. In one of his interviews around the time the movie came out, he explained that he didn’t earn any money from that movie. Here’s his full statement about it:
It’s incredible around the world. It’s, like, a billion-dollar movie. I had to laugh the other day, because there’s a thing in the paper saying that we were getting rich off this movie. If they only knew. We had an accountant in the other day, and we still haven’t earned a penny from it. How successful does a movie have to be before you make money?
But there were other things about that money-making process because when the financial reports came they were suggesting that John Deacon, Roger Taylor, and the estate of Freddie Mercury. They’ve shared £20,170,000 (equal to $27,793,352) between them.
Despite the mixed reviews about the movie, it was both successful on box office numbers by making more than £654,000,000 since its release and got also managed to get plenty of Academy Awards. Rami Malek won the Best Actor Oscar, and Bohemian Rhapsody got Sound Editing, Film Editing, and Sound Mixing Oscars.
We usually see follow up movies when a movie is that successful but this doesn’t seem like the case for Bohemian Rhapsody as Brian May shared:
“But we don’t really think there’s another movie there. That’s the long and the short of it. I think we should look somewhere else. There are other ideas that we had, but I don’t think a sequel will happen. But we have looked at it pretty seriously.”
