Many of us already know Valerie Bertinelli has been promoting her new book, Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today, that she has written to ease her pain, just a few weeks after her ex-husband’s passing. And while appearing in new interviews lately to promote her book, which was just released on January 18, Bertinelli has been also very open about her relationship with Eddie Van Halen and some of their moments as she revealed.
And back in one of her earlier interviews with People magazine, Valerie Bertinelli also reflected on how much pain Eddie Van Halen was in and how he struggle or at least tried to shut it out, and said:
“I can’t explain the feelings Ed and I had for each other. Who really knows had he not died. I doubt it. I loved him more than I know how to explain and there’s nothing sexual about it. It was more than that. And Ed and I understood that.
There is no greater love than what we had between the two of us and with that, we made this beautiful son.”
And recently, the actress and TV personality Valerie Bertinelli appeared on a new interview again, reflecting on how she regretted her decision to divorce Eddie Van Halen, which decision was also affected an extensive toll on the legendary musician’s drug and alcohol abuse, as well. She said:
“We were really kind of homebodies. Except for our jobs — mine on television and Ed’s in front of thousands and thousands of people playing — those were just things that we did; that wasn’t who we are. And we kind of lived a very quiet, sheltered life together.
I mean, there were some crazy times — yes, because there were drugs and alcohol; I mean, the ’80s were crazy — but when you get down to it, Ed had the most generous heart. He was so kind. He just didn’t know how to be that way with himself because he was in so much pain, and he deal with his pain through drugs and alcohol. And I was too young to really be as compassionate as I could have been back then.”
Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli had broken up in 2002 after 21 years passed from their wedding in 1981, but their divorce was wrapped up in 2007 as the old couple still kept their relations still on good terms, as well.
Van Halen legendary guitarist’s ex-wife also touches on their good relationship more in her book, saying, “I loved Ed more than I know how to explain. I loved his soul. We were portrayed as a mismatch. The bad boy rock star and America’s sweetheart but privately, Ed wasn’t the person people thought he was and neither was I.”
Valerie Bertinelli’s book Enough Already is now also available to be purchased if you are interested in finding out more about Eddie Van Halen and their relationship with his first wife, as well.
