Metallica‘s drummer Lars Ulrich shows his double-bass drumming technique. This happens in Metallica’s appearance on the show program “The Howard Stern Show” on April 12, 2023.
A few days ago, Lars Ulrich told Bill Maher‘s program that he influences by the legendary Irish rock band U2. It takes to show respect to their peers, and his reference to U2 only further solidifies Metallica‘s position as one of the most respected bands in the history of heavy music. Here is what Lars Ulrich said about the U2 band:
“U2, I think if we were sitting here with a couple of guys from the [Red Hot] Chili Peppers and a couple of guys from Muse and a couple of guys from other bands that are still getting on. We would all agree on one thing, which is that U2 is the ideal of being in a band that we all look up to. Because of the way they function. But they all more or less grew up on the same street and went to the same schools.
And they’ve all known each other and they have the same DNA running through their bodies. It’s also not true of a lot of bands, including the one you’re sitting here talking to a member of. I grew up in a very liberal artsy upbringing Copenhagen, Denmark. James Hetfield grew up in pretty much the opposite any of those words here in southern California in Fullerton. Do you know what I mean? Kirk Hammett [Metallica] grew up in the Mission district, also in a very liberal sort of post hippie upbringing.”

You’re likely no stranger to the epic drumming skills of Lars Ulrich from the legendary band Metallica. With his relentless speed and precision, Ulrich’s double bass drumming technique has become the stuff of drumming folklore. Recently, Metallica fans were treated to a jaw-dropping display of Ulrich’s double bass drumming prowess during a special appearance on The Howard Stern Show.
Here is Lars Ulrich‘s double-bass technique, uncovering the secrets behind his unmatched skill and exploring how you can incorporate his techniques into your own drumming style.
“Lars Ulrich from Metallica shows Howard how quickly he moves his feet when he plays the drums. There are some of those crazy songs from back in the day,…we’ve kind of edited along the way to make them a little less heady and a little more physical and try to just continue to have them…evolve so they fit our playing style more. You know as we’re getting a little older we definitely like the more physical stuff and I think we’re all less turned on by the stuff that’s super heady and cerebral.”
